For the Religious espouser, the correct way of life is defined by earthly authority (priest, teacher, scripture) as an expression of the Will of a Deity. Because the way of life is so defined, it gives the adherent a strong basis for their identity – a sense of certainty and a set of right ways and wrong ways of being.
Adherence offers access to the Universal Will through the power of prayer and meditation – the right to ask for solace, salvation, forgiveness or revenge from an all pervasive and irresistible power.
For ‘ordinary’ people, most religions place great significance on the proper raising of children. The family is the correct vehicle for this and marriage is the proper cement to hold the family together. Children need parents – preferably two and of opposite sexes – to guide them so that they, in their turn, can live life correctly and bring their own children into the world.
The most frequently approved share of responsibilities in the family is for the man to work – to be the ‘bread winner’ and the head of the family – and for the woman to care for the home and to bear and care for the children. Most religions tend towards the primacy of men over women.
In modern secular societies, the Feminist movement has made much of this - suggesting a male-driven conspiracy to "keep women in their place". This may seem strangely at odds with the fact that Religious espousal is slightly over-indexed amongst women. However, much of this may be to do with the closely related Attribute, Faith, which is again over-indexed amongst women.
For some adherents, there is a sense that there are far too many people living bad lives (offensive to the Deity) , and this can lead to real feelings of anger and a desire to lash out at society. This is a predominantly young male perspective. However, this desire is rarely exercised because, for the Religious espouser, that desire is itself acknowledged as a bad way - a "Satanic temptation".
Finally, Science is often regarded as an opponent of Religion because Deity is not one of Science’s axioms – an incomprehensible thought. As such, Science can seem soulless and very remote from the Religious espouser's “real” world - a world that is often perfectly able to accept the strictures of scientific physical laws, like gravity, while simultaneously also able to accept that "miracles" do sometimes happen.
Using ReligiousDemographic Skews: 1) Over-indexed: Slightly female, 65+, slightly down-market. 2) Under-indexed: Slightly male, 25-44, mid-market. Religious espousers also espouse other Attributes. The top five most highly correlated Attributes of Religious espousers are, in order of the strength of relationship: 1) Faith In total those who espouse Religious also over-index significantly on 19 other Attributes. |
